Upbringing Magazine

In Spring 2016 for my capstone class, I worked with a team of journalism students to launch a niche magazine targeted to black parents.

We spent ample time researching the market and found an audience that wasn’t being served. Where there were other niche parenting magazines, such as ones targeted to Latino and Latina parents, there were no magazines to capture the experience of being black and being a parent.

Launching a magazine ultimately presented a multitude of decisions, and along the way we had to take into account journalistic values, ethics, user experience, user demand, financial viability and the ultimate mission of the magazine. I learned to juggle competing forces, and we ultimately received warm feedback from Meredith Corporation when we presented our idea and our strategy.
