The Kansas City Star

In summer 2016, I worked as a Dow Jones News Fund copy editing intern at The Kansas City Star.

Most of my daily duties were on the copy editing desk, including line editing, fact checking and headline writing. In this role, I learned to be attentive to detail, and I learned the value of having a familiarity with a city when it comes to local linguistic nuances. Did you know Kansas City, North is different from North Kansas City, which is different from the Northland?

Occasionally, I took on a different role and contributed to the outreach efforts of the newspaper and the associated magazine, Ink Magazine. For Ink Magazine, I worked with an editor to create a strategy for future posts, including voice, content and aesthetic. Some of the approaches we tried didn’t work as well as we thought, but the trial and error process was beneficial.

I also occasionally took over controls of The Star’s Twitter and Facebook accounts to create social posts on their behalf.
